Excellent Dolphin Fishing

Outer Banks Fishing Charters: Godspeed Charters
We happened to hit the right spot this morning, and made our day in short order.

We had a spectacular light show this morning from heavy thunderstorms offshore, but fortunately, they continued to move further off and didn't affect us. We got on a streak of grass just shy of 40 fathoms, and found two different schools of dolphin, providing us with the opportunity to catch our limit. They were a nice class of fish, big bailers, with an occassional small gaffer mixed in. I didn't venture offshore much further, but we caught one out of two or three wahoo bites as we trolled. We wrapped it up a little early to assist a couple of the group that felt under the weather. Great day!

First Timers

The weather could have been better today, but we still managed to put together a catch of small gaffers and hoister size dolphin for this duo.

It was their first time offshore, so I was hoping for better sea conditions than what we found, but my group seemed to enjoy the bouncy ride. We dodged some pretty heavy rain squalls, except for when I found a school of dolphin around a bucket, it began to rain pretty hard, but they stood out there and caught some fish anyway. I was hoping for a marlin bite, especially since the few boats that went out yesterday had good action, but there wasn't much happening. A couple other gaffer bites during the day would take it in for us. I heard of a couple wahoos, but none for us.

New Friends

We had a nice catch of fish today, and made some new friends too!

My new friends that fished with me today drove all the way up from Florida yesterday, just for the fishing trip! I really wanted to do good for them, but the report from yesterday was kinda so so. I figured that they would enjoy pulling on some amberjacks, and it would get some fish in the box, so we tried that first thing, and were successful. We fished out, and tried to follow a lightly scattered area of grass, after a while, I was able to find a nice school of bailer dolphin, and we did pretty well on them. During the day we caught three or four small to medium gaffers, and missed a couple of wahoo bites. I'd have to say that everyone had fun, and the trip was a success! Thanks guys!

Good Dolphin

It was a greasy slick day with lots of dolphin available for the taking.

It was no trouble limiting out on bailer dolphin this morning, and the opportunity was there to test these teenager's arms with some amber jiggin'. We trolled around with the hopes of scaring up a sailfish, but only came up with one king mackerel. There was a scattered marlin bite in the deep.

Simon's First Dance

It was a proud day for me, some good friends invited my son to go along on his first offshore sportfishing adventure.

It was a beautiful day, so things were already heading in the right direction for my son to have a good experience. We did take advantage of a jigging opportunity early in the day, and everybody landed a nice amberjack, including Simon (with a little help!). During the course of the day, we caught some bailer dolphin around two different floats, and a few random small gaffers, adding up to 30 or so fish. We did catch a king mackerel, and had a couple other trolling bites that got the best of us. Simon caught two dolphin as well! Thanks guys for letting him come along!

Back at It

After a couple days of southwest wind, we managed to get back out there and find some fish.

Fishing was a little spotty, but we managed to be in the right place at the right time for some good dolphin action. We started the day off with a citation size, 39 pound dolphin, and after that we found a couple of good schools of bailers, with a few small gaffers mixed in with them. We got what we needed and moved on off to the hundred. We jumped off a saifish, was our only billfish action, and one other blue marlin was all that I heard of in the charter fleet.

Amberjackin'

The breezing southwest wind kept most of the boats to the dock, but for those of us that went out, fishing was pretty good.

I had the same group today that fished with me on the 23rd, and they expressed great interest in trying the jigging rods out on some amberjacks. It was pretty rough, but I beat my way down to one of the southern wrecks to give it a shot, but no luck. I jogged six miles to another spot, but no action there either. I decided to set out the trolling stuff, and troll to the next wreck on the list. On the way, we caught three dolphin and a king mackerel. Once we got to our destination, the vertical jigging was as good as it gets. We caught our limit, and it was about all my group wanted. They asked if I could go inshore and try for some blufish for the little guy. We caught a handful of them too! The others that ventured on offshore further had a few dolphin, a few tunas, and some billfish action.

Ol' Salt

Well, fishing was a little scrappy today, and on top of that, the wind breezed up out of the southwest, making things a little bumpy.

Today I had the pleasure of fishing with a Coast Guard veteran from WAY back in the day. This man has seen some salt. Anyway, fishing was sorta slow today, so I wasn't able to provide my group with a ton of action. We fished way off in the deep, hoping to find the conditions we fished on yesterday, but once we found them, the fish were missing. We scrapped out a handful of small gaffers, and caught one out of four yellowfins, probably a 25-30 pounder. We tried jigging, but the AJs didn't want to bite either. Still we had a fun trip, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

On Again

Things straightened back out today, and fishing was pretty good.

We wound up getting a little bit of a late start this morning, but by lunchtime, we had fished the shallows, and out over 300 fathoms looking for some dolphin. It sounded like the boats southwest of us were having better luck, so I trolled down the beach. It was a slick calm day, so it wasn't hard to see, and I finally saw a dolphin ''flip'' in some scattered grass. We finally got squared away, and wound up catching all my group wanted, which wasn't far from a limit anyway. We had a brief and unsuccessful white marlin encounter, and caught a couple gaffer dolphin as well. There was a fair sign of bills, a little of all three.

6/24 Offshore Report

Things were a little ''scattered'' today, but we found enough to keep it interesting.

The boats that fished to the south yesterday reported green water and no fish, so I steamed way on down to try to get below that band of water. It worked, but we still didn't set the world on fire. We caught a handful of dolphin and a wahoo out in 80 fathoms, and then worked up the hundred hoping for a marlin bite. There were quite a few bites, and we finally had some sort of unidentified billfish bite, but no hook-up. Everybody got to tussle with an amberjack or two for some ''big fish, light tackle'' action.
